Can you change employer during a construction NVQ?

What to discuss with your assessor when moving jobs, including role suitability, evidence access and employer funding.

You can usually change employer while completing a construction NVQ. The important question is whether your new role still allows you to demonstrate the competencies required by your qualification.

Tell your assessor before the move

Share your expected leaving date, the new role and any likely change in responsibilities. Your assessor will aim to continue your programme from where you left off and explain what needs reviewing.

Moving to a different company does not automatically mean starting again. However, you should not assume that evidence already submitted covers every remaining unit or that a different job title is suitable for the same qualification.

Check what you will do in the new role

A supervisory role, site management role and senior management role involve different responsibilities. Look at the tasks you will personally perform, the decisions you will make and the records you will be able to access.

If the new job has a narrower scope, discuss outstanding units with your assessor. It is better to identify a gap before moving than to discover near the end that you cannot demonstrate an essential activity.

Handle evidence before leaving responsibly

Ask your assessor which outstanding evidence matters. Check your employer's permission before sharing workplace records, and follow the agreed process for confidential information. Do not copy a company's files simply because you may lose access after leaving.

Where witness evidence is relevant, ask your assessor how it should be obtained and verified. A former colleague's statement is not an automatic substitute for every other assessment requirement.

If your employer is paying

Discuss the funding arrangements with your employer before the move. Any training repayment agreement, outstanding payment or new employer contribution needs to be clarified with the parties involved. Changing employer does not automatically transfer responsibility for course fees.

Keep the programme moving

Agree a revised plan for remaining evidence and meetings. If the move causes a delay, contact SiteCourses early about your completion period and any extension terms.
