How to prepare for remote construction training

Good preparation helps you concentrate on the course instead of solving avoidable technical problems on the day.

1. Read the joining instructions

Check the provider's joining information as soon as it arrives. It may include the platform, start time, identification requirements and any documents or materials you need.

2. Set up the right device

Use a suitable computer or laptop. For the SMSTS, SSSTS and refresher courses advertised through SiteCourses, phones, mobile devices and tablets are not permitted.

3. Test your camera, microphone and internet

Make sure your camera and microphone work and that the application or browser has permission to use them. If possible, use a stable internet connection and keep the device connected to power.

4. Prepare your identification

Have the required ID ready before the course begins so registration is not delayed.

5. Choose an appropriate environment

You need a quiet space where you can hear the trainer, remain visible when required and take part without frequent interruption.

6. Treat remote delivery like an attended course

Remote training is not the same as a self-paced online module. Attendance, participation and assessment requirements still apply.

7. Ask early if anything is unclear

If you are unsure about your device, eligibility or joining arrangements, ask before the course date. It is much easier to resolve an issue in advance than after the training has started.
