CSCS Black Manager Card

How to get a CSCS Black Manager Card

The Black Manager card is issued by CSCS. The route normally combines an accepted occupational qualification with the appropriate CITB Managers and Professionals HS&E test.

1. Identify the occupation you are applying under

Start with the role you actually perform. CSCS publishes occupation-specific qualification requirements for the Black Manager card. This matters because the accepted qualification title and level vary between occupations.

2. Check the accepted qualification

CSCS states that the Manager card is available subject to achievement of a relevant Construction Management/Technical NVQ/SVQ at Level 4, 5, 6 or 7, or the relevant Scottish equivalent. Its occupation list then specifies the qualification appropriate to each role.

SiteCourses currently handles enquiries for selected Level 6 routes and Level 7 routes. These are remote, competency-based NVQ assessment routes delivered and assessed through the relevant provider/awarding arrangements; SiteCourses itself does not award the qualification.

3. Complete the NVQ assessment

NVQs are work-based competency qualifications. The evidence and assessment process depends on the qualification and your occupational route. Before enrolling, confirm that the exact qualification being offered is accepted by CSCS for the occupation you intend to use on your application.

4. Pass the correct CITB HS&E test

Black Manager card applicants must pass the Managers and Professionals (MAP) CITB Health, Safety and Environment test. CSCS's current general card guidance requires applicants to have passed the appropriate test within the last two years or hold an approved alternative where applicable.

5. Apply to CSCS

Once you have the accepted qualification and test requirement in place, the card application is made to CSCS. SiteCourses does not issue CSCS cards and cannot guarantee approval; CSCS decides eligibility based on its current requirements and evidence.

Where does SMSTS fit?

SMSTS is widely used construction-management safety training, but it is not the occupational qualification for the Black Manager card. CSCS specifically states that SMSTS and SSSTS are not accepted as the qualification for Manager or Supervisor cards.

Level 6 or Level 7?

Choose according to the occupation and accepted qualification, not simply by seniority of the number. See our Level 6 vs Level 7 guide before starting an NVQ route.
