Health & Safety Awareness and the CSCS Green Labourer Card
Understand the qualification, test and card application as three separate steps.
Choose the card that matches your role
The Green Labourer Card is for construction labourers. Skilled workers should use the card route that matches their occupation and qualifications.
1. Complete an accepted qualification
The regulated Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment is accepted by CSCS and has lifetime validity. There are also approved alternative awareness courses, each with its own delivery and validity rules. IOSH self-paced e-learning is not accepted for the Labourer card, so check the exact qualification and format before booking.
Our self-paced Level 1 course costs £99 (£118.80 incl. VAT) plus VAT (£118.80 including VAT). ProQual is the awarding body. Assessment arrangements are confirmed before enrolment.
2. Pass the separate CITB Operatives test
The HS&E Operatives test has 50 questions, lasts 45 minutes and requires at least 45 correct answers. The direct booking fee is £23.50. It is separate from your course assessment.
Book through the official CITB service, or call 0344 994 4488 during the published opening hours.
3. Apply to CSCS
Submit your certificate and test details through CSCS Online or the My CSCS app. The standard card application costs £36. The separate test and card total £59.50, or £178.30 including our course at its VAT-inclusive price. Check current fees before applying.
Validity and renewal
A first Labourer card lasts two years. Those who remain in labouring roles may renew for five years with evidence of their employment and the required test arrangements. The regulated Level 1 Award does not expire; this differs from some alternative awareness certificates. Do not assume a three-year refresher rule applies to every route.
Practise the safety principles
Our four independent practice papers cover responsibilities, hazard controls, working at height, manual handling, fire, equipment and occupational health. Each includes instant marking and explanations. They are learning aids and do not replace the official course assessment or CITB revision materials.
